How To Maintain A Healthy Car Air Con
Tips to keep your car air con - and yourself - healthy
What is the best practice to maintain a healthy car Air conditioner for you and your vehicle?
- During both the hot and cold seasons, it is useful to turn the air con on at least once a week for a few minutes to help prevent gas leaks. This also allows the compressor and system seals to stay lubricated.
- To avoid breathing in too much CO2 (carbon dioxide), switch off the "recirculate" setting for long drives on the open road allowing fresh air into the vehicle. Having the recirculate setting on for long periods of time may cause headaches and drowsiness.
- As harmful bacteria and fungus tend to grow in the car air conditioning system due to humidity building and temperature variation, we also recommend having the cabin heating/cooling system sanitised and the cabin air filter changed every (08) 9331 6996 km. Poor airflow and an unusual odour can indicate it's time to replace the cabin air filter.
The cabin air filter is responsible for filtering the air that is fed into the vehicle’s heating and air conditioning systems. It traps dust, pollen, and other foreign particles, preventing them from entering the vehicle and polluting the cabin.
Cabin air filters can get dirty and when excessively contaminated, they will cause restricted airflow for the air con system, reducing the overall cooling capacity and in the long run, even the air con fan motor performance.
If you suspect that your cabin filter may be dirty and are in need of assistance, talk to your local auto electrician to determine if your car is due for a cabin air filter replacement.
